About construction NVQs

The Qualification, Built on Real Work.

The CSCS card is the recognised proof that you're qualified to work in the role you say you're in. Most UK construction sites won't let you through the gate without one.

The card colour signals your role and your level of competence. Blue for the skilled trades, Gold for supervisors and advanced craftspeople, Black for managers. Each card has a specific NVQ qualification behind it — that's what makes the card legitimate.

SAR Consulting doesn't issue cards (CSCS does that), and we don't run the Health, Safety and Environment test (you book that directly). What we do is get you the NVQ that the card requires, properly. No shortcuts, no "fast-track" routes that fall apart under scrutiny, no test-only certifications that won't actually unlock the card you need.

One conversation tells us which card fits your role. From there, we plan the right NVQ, gather evidence around your real work, and get you certified. Once your qualification is in hand, you apply to CSCS directly for the card.

Why SAR Consulting

Why the NVQ Route Matters.

The same approach applies whether you're working toward a Level 2 painting NVQ or sitting your Level 3 electrical qualification. Personal, practical, and shaped around your real working life.

01 — Personal

One-to-one with Sonia.

You work with Sonia directly from the first call to the final certificate. No call centres, no faceless paperwork, no being passed between unfamiliar people.

02 — Practical

Built around your real work.

Evidence is gathered through the work you're already doing on site. Photos, witness statements, documentation. No artificial scenarios, no time off the tools.

03 — Clear

Structured, not bureaucratic.

You always know where you are in the process. The assessment plan is laid out at the start, no surprises, no hidden steps, no jargon.

04 — Connected

NVQ to CSCS card.

Every NVQ is mapped to the right CSCS card. Once your qualification is certified, the card application itself is between you and CSCS — straightforward, since you'll already have the qualification they require.

How it works

Four clear stages from initial conversation to NVQ in hand. The same structured pathway applies across every trade and every level.

01/04

Free First Call

A short call to map your trade, your role, and the right level. No pressure, no jargon, no commitment.

02/04

Assessment Plan

A clear plan mapping your existing experience to the NVQ standards. You know exactly what evidence is needed before we start.

03/04

Evidence Gathering

Photos, witness statements, work logs and documents from your real day-to-day. Site visits arranged where needed.

04/04

Certification & CSCS

Once approved, your NVQ certificate is issued. You then apply for your CSCS card directly through CSCS. The application itself isn't part of the SAR service.

CSCS Card FAQ

Common Questions About CSCS Cards.

The questions tradespeople and managers ask about getting their CSCS card. If yours isn't here, just call.

Which CSCS card do I need? +
It depends on your role. Blue for skilled trades, Gold for supervisors and advanced craftspeople, Black for managers. A short call confirms the right card and the NVQ behind it — usually ten minutes to get a clear answer.
Do I have to do an NVQ to get a CSCS card? +
Yes — for the Blue, Gold and Black cards, the relevant NVQ is the qualification CSCS requires for proper certification. You'll also need the Health, Safety and Environment test (CSCS run that — you book it directly).
What about the "fast-track" CSCS card websites? +
Be careful. Some sites offer cards on test-only routes that bypass the NVQ. These often produce cards that don't hold up to scrutiny at the gate, or get withdrawn when CSCS audits. The proper route is through the recognised NVQ for your role, then applying for the card. No shortcuts.
How long from start to card in hand? +
Depends on the card. Blue and Gold typically take 3 to 6 months while you complete the relevant NVQ. Black at L6 or L7 takes longer — 6 to 12 months — since management qualifications need more evidence. Your CSCS application itself usually takes 2-3 weeks once the NVQ is certified.
Does SAR issue the card? +
No. SAR Consulting delivers the NVQ — the qualification that the card requires. CSCS issue the card themselves. Once your NVQ is certified, the card application is between you and CSCS, not part of SAR's service.
I've got an old card — do I need a new one? +
Cards expire every 5 years and CSCS phase out older designs periodically. If your role has changed, you may also need a different colour. A short call helps work out whether you need to renew, upgrade, or replace your card — and what (if any) qualification needs refreshing.
