01 — About NVQs

What an NVQ actually is.

The basics of construction NVQs — what they are, how they work, and why they're the recognised qualification for construction professionals across the UK.

What is a construction NVQ? +
An NVQ is a National Vocational Qualification, the recognised vocational credential for construction professionals in the UK. Construction NVQs are competence-based, meaning they're earned by demonstrating you can do the work to a required standard, evidenced through real projects rather than textbooks or exams. Each level of NVQ leads directly to the relevant CSCS card.
Who are construction NVQs for? +
Anyone working in construction who needs formal recognition of their competence. Tradespeople (Levels 2 and 3), site supervisors (Level 3 and 4), site managers (Level 6), and senior managers (Level 7). The NVQ recognises what you can already do on site, formally.
How is an NVQ different from training or a college course? +
Training courses teach you new skills. An NVQ recognises skills you already have. There are no classes, no textbooks, no exams. The whole qualification is built around demonstrating your existing competence through evidence from your real working life. That's why NVQs are particularly well-suited to construction professionals already on site.
Are NVQs recognised UK-wide? +
Yes. NVQs are nationally recognised qualifications, regulated by Ofqual in England and equivalent regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They're the standard credential for construction roles across the entire UK.
Do NVQs expire? +
NVQ certificates themselves don't expire — once you've earned the qualification, it's yours for life. The CSCS card that corresponds to the NVQ does have validity (typically five years) and needs renewing, but the underlying qualification remains in place.
02 — Trade NVQs

For working tradespeople.

Trade-specific NVQs at Levels 2 and 3 — bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering and the rest. The skilled-operative and advanced-craft pathways.

Which trades does SAR cover? +
All major construction trades and occupations including bricklaying, carpentry & joinery, plastering, painting & decorating, roofing, plumbing, electrical installation, groundworks, steel fixing, demolition, scaffolding, formwork, plant operations, and highways & drainage. If your trade isn't on the list, a quick call confirms whether it's covered.
What's the difference between Level 2 and Level 3? +
Level 2 covers the core skilled-operative competencies of the trade, leading to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. Level 3 covers more advanced work, including some supervisory tasks, leading to the Gold Advanced Craft card. Most working tradespeople with several years' experience are well suited to Level 3.
How long does a trade NVQ take to complete? +
Typically 3 to 6 months for a Level 2 or 3 trade NVQ. The pace is shaped by the work you're doing day to day — if you're regularly on the tools, evidence is gathered quickly. The framework adapts to your schedule, not the other way around.
What evidence do I need to provide? +
Photos and videos of completed work, witness testimony from supervisors or colleagues, work logs, drawings or specifications you've worked from, and any past training certificates. The assessment plan agreed at the start lays out exactly what's needed for your specific level and trade. Nothing artificial, nothing manufactured.
Can I do an NVQ if I'm self-employed? +
Yes. Self-employed tradespeople are commonly enrolled. The qualification is based on the work being done, not the employment status. Self-employed tradespeople often find the NVQ particularly valuable for tendering and bidding on contracts that require formal qualification.
I've been doing this trade for 20+ years. Do I really need an NVQ? +
Long industry experience usually makes the NVQ process faster, not slower — the qualification is designed to recognise existing competence. Whether you need it depends on your situation: if you want a CSCS Skilled Worker or Advanced Craft card, the NVQ is the route. If you're already comfortably on site without one, it may be unnecessary. The first call gives you a clear answer.
03 — Management Qualifications

Site supervision to senior management.

For working supervisors, site managers and senior managers — the NVQ pathway from Level 3 supervision through Level 7 senior construction management.

What management NVQs are available? +
SAR covers the full range: Site Supervision (Level 3), Site Management and Construction Management (Level 6), Contracts Management (Level 6), Construction Health & Safety (Level 6), and Senior Construction Management (Level 7). Each qualification maps to a specific CSCS card outcome.
What's the difference between Level 4, Level 6 and Level 7? +
Level 3 is supervisory level (forepeople, section supervisors). Level 4 is intermediate management. Level 6 is full site or construction management responsibility, leading to the Black Manager CSCS card. Level 7 is senior management — multi-project, programme or business-unit responsibility. The right level depends on your day-to-day scope.
Am I experienced enough for Level 6? +
If you're working as a site manager with substantial responsibility for running projects, you almost certainly are. Level 6 is built around real management responsibility, not job title. The first call with Sonia is exactly to establish whether your current role provides enough evidence opportunity.
What's the difference between Site Management and Construction Management at Level 6? +
Site Management focuses specifically on running individual construction sites end to end. Construction Management is broader, covering multiple sites, contracts management and pre-construction activity. Both lead to the same Black Manager CSCS card. The right choice depends on your day-to-day responsibility.
Will Sonia visit my site as part of the assessment? +
Yes, on-site visits are a structural part of management-level qualifications. Watching you run a site briefing, observing real-time decisions, and gathering evidence in context. Visits are scheduled around your project programme so they don't disrupt delivery.
Can I do a management NVQ while running multiple projects? +
Yes. Multi-project responsibility actually accelerates evidence gathering for management qualifications, particularly Level 7. The framework adapts around your project commitments, with site visits scheduled when convenient.
04 — CSCS Cards

The card your NVQ unlocks.

How NVQs map to CSCS cards, what each card unlocks, and how SAR's role fits into the wider card application process.

Which CSCS card matches which NVQ level? +
Generally: Level 2 trade NVQ leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card. Level 3 trade NVQ leads to the Gold Advanced Craft card. Level 3 management NVQ (Supervision) also leads to a Gold card (Supervisor). Level 6 or 7 management NVQ leads to the Black Manager card. The exact mapping depends on your role, which we work out on the first call.
Does SAR handle the CSCS card application? +
No. SAR Consulting delivers the NVQ qualification only, which is the credential CSCS require for the card. Once your NVQ is complete, you apply for the card directly through CSCS yourself. The card application itself isn't part of the SAR service.
Can I get a CSCS card without an NVQ? +
For the standard skilled-tier cards (Blue, Gold, Black) the NVQ is the recognised route. The Green Construction Site Operative card is a basic-level card that doesn't require an NVQ. There are also academic and chartered routes for some cards via professional bodies, separate from NVQs.
How long are CSCS cards valid? +
Typically five years from date of issue. Renewal is straightforward provided you remain in qualified work. The underlying NVQ qualification doesn't expire, so renewal is mostly about retaking the relevant CITB Health & Safety test.
What's the CITB Health & Safety test? +
A standardised test required before any CSCS card application. There are different versions for different roles — the Operatives test for trades, the Supervisors test for supervisors, and the Managers and Professionals (MAP) test for site managers. Booked at any UK test centre, takes around two hours, fee paid directly to CITB.
05 — Process

How working with SAR works.

From first call to NVQ certificate — how the qualification process actually works, what's expected of you, and what to expect from Sonia.

Will I need to take time off work? +
No. The whole approach is built around your real working life. Evidence is captured in real time on the jobs you're already doing — photos of your work, witness statements from your supervisor, documentation you already produce. Site visits happen at times that suit your schedule.
Where can I work with SAR from? +
SAR works UK-wide. Most of the process is handled remotely — calls, evidence submission, witness coordination — with site visits arranged at your location when needed. Geography is rarely a barrier.
How is evidence gathered? +
Through your real day-to-day work. Photos and videos of work in progress, witness statements from supervisors or project teams, documentation you already produce on site (drawings, programmes, risk assessments), and on-site observation visits where required. Sonia coordinates the whole process.
What if I'm not the right fit for SAR? +
The first call is exactly to establish whether SAR is the right fit. If it isn't — wrong level, wrong type of work, geographically impractical — you'll get an honest answer and, where possible, a pointer toward what might suit better. Free advice either way.
How quickly can I start? +
Typically within a couple of weeks of the initial call. The first call confirms scope, the assessment plan is then drafted within a few days, and evidence gathering begins as soon as the plan is agreed. There's no fixed start date, the framework adapts to when works for you.
06 — Pricing

What it costs.

Honest answers about pricing — indicative starting points, what's included, and what's paid separately to other organisations.

How much does an NVQ cost? +
Pricing varies by qualification level and complexity. Indicative starting points: from £750 for Level 2 trade NVQs, from £1,150 for Level 3 trade NVQs, from £1,950 for Level 6 management qualifications. The exact figure for your situation is shared on your first call with Sonia, with no obligation.
What's included in the SAR fee? +
Initial scoping and assessment plan, mapping your experience to NVQ standards, evidence gathering support, site visits where required, witness testimony coordination, NVQ submission and certification, and direct contact with Sonia throughout. The CSCS card application is separate — you handle that directly with CSCS once your NVQ is certified.
Can my employer pay for the NVQ? +
Yes, many employers cover NVQ costs as part of professional development for their staff. SAR can invoice your employer directly and provide all the paperwork needed for CITB grant claims where applicable.
Are there grants or funding available? +
CITB grants are sometimes available for employers funding NVQs for their staff, and individual circumstances occasionally qualify for other funding routes. The first call covers what might apply to your specific situation.
When and how do I pay? +
Payment terms are agreed at the point of starting the qualification, not before. Typically split across stages so you're not paying for the full amount upfront. Bank transfer or invoice for employer-funded enrolments.
07 — About SAR Consulting

Who you'll be working with.

About SAR Consulting, why one-to-one rather than a centre, and what makes the approach different.

Who is Sonia Alexis Rawlings? +
Sonia is the founder of SAR Consulting, with over 20 years' experience in the construction industry across delivery, management, and qualification consultancy. Every NVQ candidate works with Sonia directly throughout the process — there's no team behind the scenes, no handoffs.
Why one-to-one rather than a centre? +
Construction professionals are individuals doing specific work on specific sites. The right qualification recognises that. Working one-to-one means the assessment plan is shaped to your real situation, not a generic template, and the same person you spoke to on day one signs off your NVQ at the end.
Can SAR work with companies, not just individuals? +
Yes. Many enrolments come through employers funding NVQs for their staff, particularly for site management and supervisory qualifications. SAR can work with multiple candidates from the same company, with consolidated billing and reporting.
How long has SAR been operating? +
SAR Consulting is built on Sonia's 20+ years in the construction industry. The consultancy itself focuses specifically on the NVQ qualification process, drawing on that broader industry experience to make the qualification meaningful and well-suited to construction realities.
