What it gets you

Your Bricklaying NVQ. Properly Earned.

The NVQ is the official recognition of what you can already do on site. The right qualification opens the right doors, on the right sites, at the right pay grade.

01

Recognised CSCS Card

Direct route to your Skilled Worker (Blue) or Advanced Craft (Gold) card, the credential that gets you on every major site in the UK.

02

Higher Day Rates

Properly qualified bricklayers command better rates. Tier 1 contractors and bigger projects increasingly require the certification, not just the experience.

03

Career Progression

Level 3 unlocks the route to Site Supervision and management qualifications down the line. The NVQ is the foundation of every move up.

04

Formal Recognition

Years of skilled work formally documented and certified. Useful for self-employment, tendering, and proving competence to new clients.

Bricklaying NVQ FAQ

Common Questions Before You Start.

The questions every bricklayer asks before getting in touch. If yours isn't here, just call.

Which level of Bricklaying NVQ do I need? +
It depends on your current role and the CSCS card you're aiming for. Level 2 covers the core skilled bricklayer competencies and leads to a Blue CSCS card. Level 3 covers more advanced work, complex brickwork and supervisory tasks, and leads to a Gold Advanced Craft card. Most working bricklayers with several years' experience are best suited to Level 3, but the first conversation with Sonia maps the right level to your specific situation.
How long will the Bricklaying NVQ take? +
Typically 3 to 5 months for Level 2, and 4 to 6 months for Level 3. The pace is shaped by the work you're doing day to day. If you're regularly on the tools doing varied brickwork, evidence is gathered faster. The framework adapts to your schedule rather than the other way around.
Do I need to take time off work to get my NVQ? +
No. The whole approach is built around your real working life. Evidence is captured in real time on the jobs you're already doing — photos of your work, witness statements from your supervisor, documentation you already produce. Site visits happen at times that suit your schedule.
What evidence do I need to provide for a Bricklaying NVQ? +
Photos and videos of completed brickwork, witness testimony from supervisors or colleagues, work logs, drawings or specifications you've worked from, and any past training certificates. The assessment plan we agree at the start lays out exactly what's needed for your specific level. Nothing artificial, nothing manufactured.
Will I need to do a written exam? +
No. NVQs are competence-based, not exam-based. The whole qualification is built around demonstrating that you can do the work to the required standard. There are no textbooks, no formal exams, and no classroom time required.
Can I get my CSCS card without an NVQ? +
For the Skilled Worker (Blue) and Advanced Craft (Gold) cards, an NVQ at the appropriate level is required. The Bricklaying NVQ is the qualification that unlocks those cards, so the two go together. Once your NVQ is complete, you apply for your CSCS card directly through CSCS, with Sonia's guidance on the process.
I've been laying bricks for 20 years. Is there a quicker route? +
Long industry experience usually makes the process faster, not slower. The whole point of the NVQ is to recognise existing competence. The more evidence you can bring from past projects, the more straightforward the qualification becomes. Long-tenured bricklayers often complete Level 3 toward the lower end of the timeframe.
