About construction NVQs

The Qualification, Built on Real Work.

A construction management NVQ is the formal recognition for the supervisory or management role you're already performing.

NVQs are competence-based, meaning everything is evidenced through real work rather than textbooks or full-time courses. That makes them uniquely well-suited to working managers: the qualification recognises what you're already doing day-to-day, captured through site documents, project photos, witness statements from your team, and the meetings you'd be having anyway.

Levels 3 through 7 cover the full management progression. Site Supervision at Level 3 for foremen and team leaders. Site Management, Construction Management, Contracts Management and Construction Health & Safety at Level 6 for established managers. Senior Management at Level 7 for directors and senior leadership. Each level maps directly to your CSCS card — Gold for supervision at L3, Black for the L6 and L7 management qualifications.

SAR Consulting handles the NVQ qualification, personally. Initial conversation to map the right level, assessment plan, evidence gathering, and certification. One consultant, one structured pathway, around your real working life. The CSCS card application itself happens separately, directly between you and CSCS.

Why SAR Consulting

Four principles. Every level.

The same approach applies whether you're working toward a Level 2 painting NVQ or sitting your Level 3 electrical qualification. Personal, practical, and shaped around your real working life.

01 — Personal

One-to-one with Sonia.

You work with Sonia directly from the first call to the final certificate. No call centres, no faceless paperwork, no being passed between unfamiliar people.

02 — Practical

Built around your real work.

Evidence is gathered through the work you're already doing on site. Photos, witness statements, documentation. No artificial scenarios, no time off the tools.

03 — Clear

Structured, not bureaucratic.

You always know where you are in the process. The assessment plan is laid out at the start, no surprises, no hidden steps, no jargon.

04 — Connected

NVQ to CSCS card.

Every NVQ is mapped to the right CSCS card. Once your qualification is certified, the card application itself is between you and CSCS — straightforward, since you'll already have the qualification they require.

How it works

02/04

A clear plan mapping your existing experience to the NVQ standards. You know exactly what evidence is needed before we start.

03/04

04/04

Certification & CSCS

Once approved, your NVQ certificate is issued. You then apply for your CSCS card directly through CSCS. The application itself isn't part of the SAR service.

Management NVQ FAQ

Common Questions About Management Qualifications.

The questions construction supervisors and managers ask about getting their NVQ. If yours isn't here, just call.

Which management qualification is right for me? +
The right level matches your real day-to-day responsibilities. Site Supervision at L3 fits foremen and team leaders. Site Management or Construction Management at L6 fits established managers running projects. Contracts Management at L6 is for commercial side. Health & Safety at L6 is for dedicated H&S roles. Senior Management at L7 is for directors and senior leadership. A ten-minute call usually confirms the right level.
What's the difference between Level 6 and Level 7? +
Level 6 covers experienced manager roles with day-to-day project responsibility — site managers, construction managers, contracts managers, H&S managers. Level 7 is for senior leadership: directors, heads of operations, business owners taking strategic responsibility across multiple projects or the wider business. Both unlock the Black Manager CSCS card.
How long does a management NVQ take? +
Typically 6 to 12 months for a Level 6 management qualification, longer for Level 7 senior management. The pace is shaped by the work you're doing day to day — projects you're running, meetings you'd be having anyway, decisions you're making. The framework adapts to your schedule, not the other way around.
What evidence do I need to provide? +
Project documents, site meeting minutes, programmes you've built, budgets you've managed, RAMS you've signed off, witness testimony from your team and clients, photos of work you've overseen, and any past training certificates. The assessment plan agreed at the start lays out exactly what's needed for your specific level.
Will I need to do exams or attend classes? +
No. NVQs are competence-based, not exam-based. The qualification is built around demonstrating that you're already performing the role to the required standard. There are no textbooks, no formal exams, and no classroom attendance — everything is evidenced through your real management work.
I'm a director / business owner — does this still apply to me? +
Yes. Level 7 Senior Management is specifically designed for directors, business owners and senior leadership in construction. The evidence is drawn from strategic decisions, business-wide oversight, and the broader management responsibilities that come with the role.
