Black CSCS Card FAQ

Common Questions About the Black Card.

Questions construction managers ask before getting in touch about their Black card pathway. If yours isn't here, just call.

Can I get a Black card without an NVQ? +
No. The Black Manager card requires NVQ Level 6 or Level 7 qualification. Other routes such as chartered status with relevant professional bodies can also lead to specific manager-tier cards, but for the standard Black Manager card the NVQ route is the requirement.
What's the difference between Level 6 and Level 7 routes? +
Level 6 NVQs cover responsibility for individual sites or projects. Level 7 covers multi-project, programme or business-unit responsibility. Both lead to the Black Manager card, but the right route depends on your day-to-day scope of responsibility. The first call confirms which fits your current role.
How long does the whole pathway take? +
Typically 6 to 12 months for the NVQ Level 6 route, end to end. The CITB test can be sat at any point during that time, and the CSCS card application is processed within a few weeks of NVQ certification. Level 7 timeframes are similar.
Do I need to take time off work for the qualification? +
No. The NVQ is built around your live management work. Site visits are scheduled around your project programme so they don't disrupt delivery. The CITB test takes around two hours at a test centre and can be booked at a convenient time.
How long is the Black card valid? +
Five years from date of issue. Renewal is straightforward provided you remain in qualified work. SAR Consulting can support the renewal process if and when needed, including any refresher CITB test required.
Will I be reimbursed if my employer covers training? +
Many employers cover the full pathway as part of professional development for their site managers. SAR Consulting can invoice your employer directly and provide all paperwork needed for CITB grant claims where applicable.
I already have my NVQ Level 6, do I still need SAR? +
If you already hold a current Level 6 or 7 NVQ in a relevant management discipline, you don't need SAR for the Black card itself. You apply directly through CSCS once you've passed the relevant CITB H&S test. SAR Consulting only supports the NVQ qualification side of the pathway, not standalone card applications.
